Like many multilevel marketing programs, Herbalife has had its share of negative press and problems. It’s also has had some leadership issues with its founder Mark Hughes death in 2000 allegedly from an alcohol and doxepin overdose and now its COO Gregory L. Probert has resigned “after acknowledging he exaggerated his academic credentials.” I’m pretty sure that “exaggerated” actually means “lied”. Probert’s resume apparently said he had a MBA from California State University, Los Angeles, but in fact he never completed the course to earn the degree.
People are already suspicious of direct sales companies. Problems that suggest deceit only make things worse. In network marketing, one bad apple not only ruins the barrel, it ruins the orchard.
