New York … Not the Place to Telecommute

2 comments Posted by success

Telecommuting is a fabulous situation, but you’ll be better off not doing it for a New York based company if you live in another state. New York has determined that telecommuters must pay state income tax to New York if you work for a New York based company, even if you live in California or another state. That means telecommuters pay taxes twice! But it gets worse. A recent ruling from a New York Court of Appeals has determined that telecommuters working for a New York based company but living out of state are NOT eligible for unemployment benefits in New York. It just doesn’t seem right. They’ll take your money even though you don’t live there, but won’t give you benefits.
