Over 5 million workers are expected to work from home today in the United Kingdom to celebrate National Work From Home Day. Nearly 3.5 million people currently telecommute in the UK, roughly 12% of the working population.

Ten years ago telecommuting was seen as a pie-in-the-sky work arrangement. Today telecommuting is becoming a strategy of small and mid-size companies, as well as Federal and state governments to save money. Further its environmental benefits are huge. This is true even if everyone telecommuted only one day a week or even a month.

The benefits are equally as good for the worker who can save on gas, avoid the hassles of commuting, and work more productively by staying home.

So, if its okay with your boss, why not join in the celebration even if you’re not in the UK?
